What is an ATIP request?

An ATIP request allows individuals or organizations to:

  • Access public records from government institutions.
  • Request personal information held about them by government bodies such as immigration records.

Anyone, including Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and businesses, can make an ATIP request. You can also make a request on ATIP.ca even if you are not present in Canada.

You can request:

  • Personal information about yourself held by government organizations.
  • Public records such as reports, policies, or internal memos from government departments. Certain restrictions apply, such as information related to national security or third-party privacy.

By law, most ATIP requests must be processed within 30 calendar days. However, extensions may be applied if the request is complex or involves a large volume of records.

GCMS request often refer to requests made to IRCC or CBSA for immigration records. GCMS requests are made under ATIP which means ATIP requests made to IRCC and CBSA are informally called GCMS requests.
